How to Draw a City at Night

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a city at night in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: street and first block.

Print

  1. Step 1: Street and first block

Draw a long street line. Start on its left: go up, over a little box, down, and stop on it.

  2. Step 2: A pointed tower

Start on the first block's corner. Draw a tall tower up to a point and down. Stop on the street.

Tip Make it about twice as tall as the first block.

  3. Step 3: A slanted roof

Start halfway down the tower's wall. Draw a roof slanting up, then a wall down. Stop on the street.

  4. Step 4: A stepped tower

Start at the roof's top corner. Go up, step in, up, across, and down in steps. Stop on the street.

Tip Both steps are the same size, like a wedding cake.

  5. Step 5: A low block

Start low on the stepped tower's wall. Draw a line across and a wall down. Stop on the street.

  6. Step 6: A domed block

Start at the low block's corner. Go up, across, over a round dome, across and down. Stop on the street.

  7. Step 7: Windows on the left

On the first block draw 2 rows of 2 windows. On the pointed tower draw 4 rows of 2.

Tip Tall thin windows, all the same size, in neat rows.

  8. Step 8: Windows in the middle

On the slanted block draw 2 rows of 2 windows. On the stepped tower draw 3 rows of 2.

  9. Step 9: Windows on the right

On the low block draw 1 row of 2 windows. On the domed block draw 2 rows of 2.

  10. Step 10: Moon and stars

Above the low block draw a big round moon with 3 small rings inside. Add 4 stars around the towers.

Tip Keep the stars away from the roofs.

  11. Step 11: Yellow lights

Colour every window, the moon and all 4 stars yellow.

Tip Yellow first: light colours go on before dark ones.

  12. Step 12: Grey blocks and street

Colour the first, slanted and low blocks dark grey, around the windows. Colour the street light grey.

  13. Step 13: Dark blue night

Colour everything above the roofs dark blue, around the moon and stars.

  14. Step 14: Black towers

Colour the 2 towers and the domed block black, around the windows. Your city at night is done!
