How to Draw a Spiral Staircase

Step 1: Pole and ball

In the middle of your paper draw a tall thin pole. Draw a small ball on top of it.

Tip Keep the 2 long sides straight and close together. Leave room on both sides for the steps.

Step 2: The bottom step

Start low on the pole's left side. Draw a flat wedge out to the left. Add a thick edge below.

Tip Every step is a wedge, like a slice of pizza with its point at the pole.

Step 3: The second step

Just above, draw a wedge from the pole down to the left, with a thick edge. Rub out hidden lines.

Tip This step is nearer to you, so it hides a bit of the bottom step.

Step 4: The third step

A little higher, on the right, draw a wedge from the pole down to the right. Add its thick edge.

Step 5: The fourth step

Higher up, draw a wedge from the pole out to the right, flat on top. Add its thick edge.

Tip Each step sits a little higher than the last one.

Step 6: The fifth step

Just above it, draw a wedge from the pole out to the right, flat underneath. Add its thick edge.

Tip These 2 steps make a sideways V with a gap between them.

Step 7: The sixth step

Higher again, draw a wedge from the pole up to the right. Add a thick edge under it.

Step 8: The top step

Now on the left, draw a wedge from the pole up to the left. Add a thick edge under it.

Tip Now the steps wind nearly all the way round the pole.

Step 9: The floor

Draw a floor line under the pole, from one side of your paper to the other.

Step 10: Yellow ball, grey pole

Colour the ball yellow and the pole light grey.

Step 11: Wooden tops

Colour the flat top of all 7 steps light brown, like wood.

Step 12: Dark edges

Colour the thick edge of every step dark brown. Go over your lines. Your spiral staircase is done!
