How to Draw a Cartoonist

Draw a cartoonist in 13 steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Step 1: The head
Near the top of your paper, left of the middle, draw an egg head, a little narrower at the chin.
Tip Keep the head on the left: the drawing board stands on the right.
Step 2: The face
Draw 2 eyes with eyebrows, a nose and a smile. Add C ears that start and stop on the head.
Step 3: Tufty hair
From above the left ear, draw bumpy tufts over to the right ear. Join the ends with a curve.
Step 4: T-shirt and pocket
Draw 2 neck lines down from the chin. From their ends draw a T-shirt with short sleeves. Add a pocket.
Step 5: Arms
From the left sleeve, draw an arm down to the wrist. From the right, one bent up to the wrist.
Tip The right arm reaches up toward the board: that fist will hold the pen.
Step 6: Hands
On the left wrist, draw a round hand with a thumb. On the right, a fist with a thumb line.
Step 7: Pen
From the top of the fist, draw a thick pen pointing up and right, with a pointed tip.
Step 8: Drawing board and ground
Draw a board where the pen touches. Add a bar and 2 legs from it down to a ground line.
Step 9: Comic panels
Draw a line down and one across the board, edge to edge. Add a speech bubble, star, sun and zigzag.
Step 10: Jeans and sneakers
From the T-shirt's left end, draw 2 jean legs down and back to its right end. Add 2 sneakers.
Step 11: Peach skin, pink cheeks
Go over your lines. Colour the cheeks pink, then the face, neck, ears, arms and hands peach around them.
Tip Leave the eyes white.
Step 12: Green T-shirt, blue jeans
Colour the T-shirt green, leaving the pocket white, and the jeans blue.
Step 13: Red pen, black hair
Colour the pen and the star red, and the hair and sneakers black. Your cartoonist is done!
