How to Draw a Carousel

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a carousel in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big pointed roof.

Print

  1. Step 1: Big pointed roof

Near the top draw a wide pointed roof: a point at the top, swooping out to a wide flat bottom.

  2. Step 2: The bumpy edge

Start at one end of the roof bottom. Draw 7 bumps hanging down, over to the other end.

  3. Step 3: Post and platform

Under the middle bump draw a thick post straight down. Below it draw a long flat box and ground line.

  4. Step 4: Two horse heads

Draw 2 boot shapes: start at the neck, go round the nose, stop at the chest. Add ears and eyes.

Tip Draw the left horse a little higher than the right one. Carousel horses go up and down.

  5. Step 5: Two bodies

Start at the back of each neck. Draw an egg shape lying down, round to the front of the neck.

  6. Step 6: Galloping legs

Give each horse a bent front leg and a kicking back leg. Start and stop each one on the tummy.

  7. Step 7: Far legs

Behind those, draw 2 more legs peeking out on each horse. Start and stop each one on the tummy.

  8. Step 8: Manes and tails

Draw 3 bumps down the back of each neck. Add a curved tail: start and stop on the rump.

  9. Step 9: Saddles and poles

Draw a U saddle on each back. Add a pole from roof down to saddle, and from tummy to platform.

  10. Step 10: Roof stripes

From just under the roof point, draw 4 lines fanning down to the edge, 2 on each side.

  11. Step 11: Flag on top

Draw a little ball on the roof point. From it, draw a pole up, stopping just above. Add a flag.

  12. Step 12: Yellow trim

Go over your lines. Colour the flag, the little ball, the bumpy edge and the 2 poles yellow.

  13. Step 13: Blue and red

Colour the post and the saddles sky blue. Colour the middle and outside roof stripes and the platform red.

  14. Step 14: Brown manes

Colour the manes and tails brown. Leave the horses white. Your carousel is ready to ride!
