How to Draw Canal Houses
Draw canal houses in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the middle house.
Step 1: The middle house
In the middle, draw a tall narrow box for the middle house, standing on a line below the middle.
Step 2: Two neighbours
Draw a shorter narrow box against each side of it, standing on the same line, so the 3 houses touch.
Tip Canal houses are squeezed together, tall and thin, each with a fancy top.
Step 3: A bell-shaped top
On the middle house, draw a tall bell-shaped top curving in to a point. Add a little hook arm.
Step 4: A stepped top
On the left house, draw a stepped top: up, across, up, across to a flat middle, then down in steps.
Step 5: A pointed top
On the right house, draw a simple triangle top from wall to wall.
Step 6: Windows
Draw 2 square windows on the left house, 3 on the middle house and 2 on the right house.
Step 7: The door
At the bottom of the middle house, under the windows, draw a small arched door.
Step 8: The quay
Along the bottom of the houses, draw a line from one side across to the other, and one below it.
Tip A quay is the stone edge of a canal, where the houses stand.
Step 9: The canal
Under the quay, draw 3 wavy lines right across the page for the canal water.
Step 10: The boat
On the second wave, draw a long low boat with a small cabin box on top.
Step 11: A cloud
Draw a puffy cloud in the top right: little bumps over the top and a flatter line underneath.
Step 12: Sky windows, stone quay
Colour the windows sky blue and the quay stone grey. Leave the cloud and the boat's cabin white.
Step 13: Tan houses, blue canal
Colour the side houses tan, around their windows, and the canal blue, around the boat.
Step 14: Brown boat, red house
Colour the door and boat brown. Colour the middle house red, around its windows and door. Done!
