How to Draw a Cajon

Step 1: The box drum

In the lower middle draw a big box, a little taller than wide, for the drum.

Tip A cajon is a wooden box drum: you sit on it and slap the front.

Step 2: Sound hole

Low down in the middle of the box, draw a round sound hole and colour it black.

Step 3: Screws

Draw 3 little round screws down the left edge of the box, and 3 down the right edge.

Step 4: The player's head

High above the box, draw an egg for the head, a little narrower at the chin.

Tip Leave a gap between the head and the box for the body.

Step 5: The face

Below the middle of the head, draw 2 oval eyes with black dots. Add a nose and a smile.

Step 6: Hair

Draw a cap of hair over the top of the head, with a wavy fringe above the eyes.

Step 7: Neck and T-shirt

Draw 2 neck lines. From the left one, draw a T-shirt with short sleeves, ending at the right.

Tip The T-shirt stops just above the box.

Step 8: Short legs

From the T-shirt draw 2 short legs hanging down the front of the box, thinner at the ankles.

Tip The legs are short, so the feet do not reach the ground.

Step 9: Shoes

Under each leg, draw a shoe with the toe pointing out. Add a curved line across each toe.

Step 10: Bent arms

From each sleeve, draw an arm out to a round elbow, then in to the top of the box.

Tip Each arm gets thinner towards the wrist.

Step 11: Slapping hands

On each wrist, draw a round hand with a thumb bump, resting on a top corner of the box.

Step 12: Ground and notes

Draw a ground line under the box, from left to right. Add a black music note on each side.

Step 13: Wood box

Go over your lines. Colour the box light brown, around the hole, legs, shoes and hands.

Step 14: Peach skin

Colour the face, neck, arms and hands peach, with pink cheeks. Leave the eyes and hair white.

Step 15: Brown hair, red shirt

Colour the hair brown and the T-shirt red.

Step 16: Blue legs, black shoes

Colour the legs blue and the shoes black. Slap, tap, slap!
