How to Draw a Baobab Tree

10 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw a baobab tree in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the bottle trunk.

Print

  1. Step 1: The bottle trunk

From the ground, draw a fat bulging side curving in to a short neck. Do both sides.

  2. Step 2: 5 thick branches

From the neck, draw 5 short thick branches spreading up and out. Leave each end open.

  3. Step 3: Forked tips

At each open end, start on one edge, draw 2 rounded tips like a V, and stop on the other.

  4. Step 4: Leaf clouds

Over the tips, draw 5 bumpy leaf clouds in a wide flat row, biggest in the middle.

Tip Rub out the bits of branch inside the clouds.

  5. Step 5: Bark lines

Inside the trunk, draw 2 long bark lines curving like the sides, and 1 short line up high.

  6. Step 6: A knot hole

Low on the trunk, left of the middle, draw a small egg for a knot hole.

  7. Step 7: The ground

Start well left of the tree and draw a long ground line under the trunk. Stop well right of it.

  8. Step 8: Grass

Start on the ground beside the trunk. Draw 2 short curved grass blades on each side.

  9. Step 9: Green leaves

Colour all 5 leaf clouds green, right up to their bumpy edges.

  10. Step 10: Brown trunk

Colour the trunk and branches wood brown, around the knot hole. Then colour the knot hole dark brown.
