How to Draw a Bao

10 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw a bao in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the bun.

Print

  1. Step 1: The bun

Left of the middle draw a wide puffy dome with a flat bottom and a little knob on top.

Tip Make it wider than it is tall, with soft round bottom corners.

  2. Step 2: Pleats

From just under the knob draw 5 short curved lines fanning down over the dome, like wheel spokes.

Tip The dough is twisted up to the knot.

  3. Step 3: A second bun

Behind the first bun, on the right, draw a smaller dome with a tiny knob. Add 3 pleats under it.

  4. Step 4: A plate

Behind both buns draw a big flat oval plate. The buns sit on it, with the plate's front showing.

  5. Step 5: Chopsticks

On the front of the plate draw 2 long thin sticks side by side, slanting a little to the right.

Tip Keep them on the plate, with a little gap between.

  6. Step 6: Steam

Above each bun draw a short wiggly steam line going straight up.

  7. Step 7: Shines

Inside the top right of each bun draw one short curved line for a shine.

  8. Step 8: White buns

Go over your lines, then colour both buns white.

  9. Step 9: Sky plate

Colour the plate sky blue, going around the buns and chopsticks.

  10. Step 10: Wood chopsticks

Colour the chopsticks wood brown. Your bao buns are ready to eat!
