How to Draw Bamboo

10 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw bamboo in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the middle cane.

Print

  1. Step 1: The middle cane

Start at the bottom middle. Draw a tall cane up to a soft tip and back down to the bottom.

Tip Leave the bottom open, like an upside-down U.

  2. Step 2: Two more canes

Draw a shorter cane on the left and a taller one on the right. Start and stop at the bottom.

Tip Leave a hand of space between the canes.

  3. Step 3: Middle joints

Draw 4 ring joints down the middle cane, a hand apart. Each joint is 2 short curves across the cane.

  4. Step 4: Left joints

Draw 3 ring joints on the left cane. Don't line them up with the middle ones.

  5. Step 5: Right joints

Draw 4 ring joints on the right cane, not level with the others.

  6. Step 6: Leaves up top

At the top joint of each cane, draw a long thin leaf on each side, hanging out and down.

Tip Keep each leaf tip a finger away from the next cane.

  7. Step 7: Lower leaves

At a lower joint on each cane, draw 1 or 2 more long thin leaves hanging out.

  8. Step 8: Ground and grass

Draw a ground line under the canes, left edge to right edge. Add a few grass blades between them.

  9. Step 9: Light green leaves

Colour every leaf a light green.

  10. Step 10: Dark green canes

Colour all 3 canes dark green, right up to the tips. Go over your lines and your bamboo is done!
