How to Draw Badlands
Draw badlands in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: middle hill.
Step 1: Middle hill
In the middle draw a big wide hill with sloping sides and 2 soft bumps on top.
Tip Badlands are dry hills striped like a layer cake, carved by rain.
Step 2: Left hill
On the left draw a taller bumpy hill, from near the left edge to behind the middle hill.
Step 3: Right hill
On the right draw a lower bumpy hill, from behind the middle hill to near the right edge.
Step 4: Middle hill stripes
Draw 4 evenly spaced lines across the middle hill, top to bottom, for the rock layers.
Step 5: Side hill stripes
Draw 4 layer lines across the left hill and 3 across the right hill, each stopping at the middle hill.
Step 6: The ground
Draw the ground line across the bottom of the paper.
Step 7: Dry gully
Draw a dry gully: 2 close wiggly lines that start on the ground line and stop above the bottom edge.
Step 8: Dry bush
On the ground in front of the middle hill, draw a bush: 3 soft round bumps on a flat bottom.
Step 9: Sun and bird
Draw a sun with short rays in the top right corner and a little flying bird on the left.
Step 10: Striped middle hill
Colour the middle hill in stripes between the lines: tan, ginger, tan, ginger, tan from the top down.
Step 11: Striped side hills
Colour the left and right hills in stripes the same way, ginger first.
Step 12: Sandy ground
Colour the ground sandy around the bush, right to the edges, and the gully tan.
Step 13: Green bush, yellow sun
Colour the bush green and the sun yellow. Go over all your lines and your badlands are done!
