How to Draw an Avocet
Draw an avocet in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a small round head.
Step 1: A small round head
Near the top left draw a small round head, a little wider than tall. Leave lots of room under it.
Step 2: Upturned bill
From the front of the head draw a long thin bill out left, bending up to a point, and back.
Tip The avocet bill curves up, not down: thin as a needle.
Step 3: One big eye
Behind the bill, level with the middle of the head, draw a big round eye with a black dot.
Tip Leave a strip of cheek between the bill and the eye.
Step 4: Black hood line
Start on top of the head, above the eye. Draw 1 curved line down the back of the head.
Tip Keep the line a finger away from the eye.
Step 5: Neck
From the head draw 2 neck lines spreading wider, stopping a head lower. Add a stripe inside the back one.
Step 6: Slim oval body
Start at the bottom of the back neck line. Draw 1 big oval body, ending at the front neck line.
Step 7: Teardrop wing
On the body, behind the neck, draw 1 big teardrop wing sweeping back to a point near the rump.
Step 8: Little tail
At the rump, start on the body. Draw a little pointed tail out and down, and back to the body.
Step 9: Two long thin legs
Under the tummy draw 2 very long thin legs, with knees that bend back and 3 thin toes each.
Step 10: Shallow water
From the left edge draw 1 wavy line to the right edge, behind the legs.
Step 11: Blue legs and water
Leave the head, neck and body white. Colour the legs blue and the water light blue.
Tip Keep the eye white.
Step 12: Dark wing, black hood
Colour the bill, wing and tail dark grey. Colour the hood and the neck stripe black.
