How to Draw an Army Ant

12 steps · Tricky · about 9 min

Draw an army ant in 12 steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the soldier's big head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The soldier's big head

On the left draw a BIG egg head lying on its side.

Tip The soldier's head is enormous. Leave room in front for the huge jaws.

  2. Step 2: Eyes, smile and cheeks

Draw 2 big eyes across the middle, a round cheek under each, and an open smile between.

  3. Step 3: Feelers

From the top of the head draw 2 bent feelers going back. End each one in a small ball.

  4. Step 4: Chest, waist and tummy

Behind the head draw a round chest, a tiny waist ball, then a big egg tummy with one curved line.

  5. Step 5: Big curved jaws

On the head's front draw 2 big curved jaws, one sweeping down and one up, points almost meeting.

Tip The jaws are as long as half its head: that makes it a soldier.

  6. Step 6: Legs and ground

Under the chest draw 3 bent legs with foot pads: forward, down and back. Rule a ground line.

Tip Make each leg thinner at the foot, with a knee in the middle.

  7. Step 7: The worker's head

Leave a gap behind the soldier. Draw a smaller egg head with 2 eyes, a smile and 2 small jaws.

Tip The worker walks behind the soldier, never touching it.

  8. Step 8: The worker's body

Behind the worker's head draw a round chest, a tiny waist ball and an egg tummy with a curved line.

  9. Step 9: Worker feelers and legs

Give the worker 2 bent feelers on its head. Under its chest draw 3 smaller bent legs with pads.

  10. Step 10: Pink cheeks, red mouth

Colour the soldier's round cheeks pink and its open mouth red.

  11. Step 11: Reddish brown soldier

Colour the soldier reddish brown, feet and feeler balls too, going around the mouth and cheeks. Leave the eyes white.

  12. Step 12: Reddish brown worker

Colour the worker reddish brown too, with its legs and feet. Leave its eyes white.
