How to Draw an Apatosaurus
Draw an apatosaurus in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: small head.
Step 1: Small head
Near the top left, draw a small egg lying on its side for the head.
Tip Leave lots of room below and to the right for the big body.
Step 2: Eye and smile
Draw a big eye with a pupil and a shine. Dot a nostril. Draw a short smile on the snout.
Step 3: Neck and back
Start behind the head. Draw a thick neck down, then a big round hill. Stop where the tail starts.
Tip The hill is highest over the back legs.
Step 4: Long tail
Start where the back stops. Draw a long tail out to a thin tip, and back under to the hips.
Tip Keep the tail low: it trails out behind and does not curl up.
Step 5: Throat and tummy
Start under the chin. Draw down the throat, round the chest and along the tummy. Stop under the tail.
Tip Make the chest round, then tuck the line back in under the tummy.
Step 6: Front leg
Behind the round chest, draw a thick leg down to a flat round foot.
Tip Rub out the tummy line across the top of the leg.
Step 7: Back leg
Under the hips, draw a thick leg down to a flat round foot.
Tip Let the tail line run down into the back of the leg. Rub out the lines across the top.
Step 8: Far legs
Draw 2 far legs peeking out, one beside each near leg, with a gap in the middle.
Tip Only a strip of each far leg shows. Keep the feet on the same line.
Step 9: The ground
Draw one long straight line under all 4 feet, right across the paper.
Step 10: Back spots
Draw 3 round spots along the top of the back, with the middle one biggest.
Tip Keep every spot inside the body, away from the lines.
Step 11: Light green spots
Colour the 3 spots light green first.
Step 12: Colour it green
Go over your lines. Colour the head, neck, body, tail and legs green, around the spots. Leave the eye white.
Tip Press harder on the 2 far legs so they sit further back.
