How to Draw a 3D Hand

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a 3D hand in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the palm.

Print

  1. Step 1: The palm

In the middle of your paper draw a big fat egg with a flatter top, bulging out on the left.

Tip Stripes will make this flat hand pop out of the page.

  2. Step 2: The middle finger

Start on the palm top, left of centre. Draw a tall finger up and round, back to the palm.

Tip Let it get a little thinner toward its round tip.

  3. Step 3: Pointing and ring fingers

Draw a shorter finger each side of the middle one, starting and stopping on the palm, with a V gap.

  4. Step 4: The little finger

On the far right start on the palm and draw the shortest finger, leaning out, back to the palm.

  5. Step 5: The thumb

Start on the palm at the left bulge. Draw a fat thumb leaning out left, back to the palm.

  6. Step 6: The wrist

Start on the bottom of the palm. Draw 2 wrist lines down, stopping near the bottom of your paper.

  7. Step 7: Lines over the fingers

Now the magic. Draw straight lines across the page, side to side, bumping up in a hill over each finger.

Tip Keep the flat parts flat and the hills smooth.

  8. Step 8: Lines over the palm

Keep going down the page: 4 more lines across, each bumping up in one big smooth hill over the hand.

  9. Step 9: Lines over the wrist

Draw 2 more lines across, bumping up over the wrist. The last one meets the wrist lines' ends.

  10. Step 10: Yellow stripe

Go over your lines, then colour the middle stripe yellow, right over the hand.

  11. Step 11: Orange and red stripes

Skip one stripe each time. Colour the next stripe up orange and the top stripe red.

  12. Step 12: Green and blue stripes

Below the yellow, skip one stripe. Colour the next one green and the bottom one blue.

Tip Hold the page away: the hand pushes out of the paper!
