How to Draw a Yawning Face

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a yawning face in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Near the top of your paper, draw a big soft egg for the head, a little narrower at the chin.

Tip Make it more than half the page tall: a cartoon head is big.

  2. Step 2: Two ears

Halfway down each side of the head, draw a C ear. Add a small C inside each.

  3. Step 3: Eyes squeezed shut

Draw 2 curves that dip down for the shut eyes. High above each, draw a curved eyebrow.

Tip High eyebrows show the face is stretching in a yawn.

  4. Step 4: Big yawning mouth

Under the eyes, draw a big tall oval for the open mouth. Inside, at the bottom, draw a tongue hill.

Tip A tall oval is a yawn. Keep it above the chin.

  5. Step 5: A sleepy tear

At the outer corner of the left eye, draw one small teardrop with its point at the top.

Tip A big yawn can squeeze out a tiny tear.

  6. Step 6: Messy hair

Start above the left ear. Draw 6 soft tufts over the top of the head, down to the right ear.

Tip Sleepy hair is messy, so the tufts can be different sizes.

  7. Step 7: Fringe

From the hair's right end, draw 3 swoops across the forehead, above the eyebrows, to the hair's left end.

Tip Rub out the head line inside the hair.

  8. Step 8: Neck and shirt

Under the chin, draw 2 short neck lines and a U collar. Slope a shoulder out and down each side.

  9. Step 9: A sleeve

From the bottom right, draw a sleeve reaching up towards the chin. Draw a line across it for the cuff.

Tip The sleeve gets a little thinner towards the hand.

  10. Step 10: Hand at the mouth

On top of the sleeve, draw a mitten hand beside the mouth, thumb on the right. Add 3 finger lines.

Tip The fingers point up at the yawn, as if to cover it.

  11. Step 11: Pink and peach

Colour the cheeks and the tongue pink. Colour the face, ears, neck and hand peach, around the mouth.

  12. Step 12: Yellow and light blue

Colour the messy hair yellow. Colour the shirt, the sleeve and the little tear light blue.

  13. Step 13: Red mouth

Colour the inside of the mouth red, above the tongue. Go over your lines and your yawning face is done.
