How to Draw a Flying Wren

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a flying wren in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: round head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Round head

On the left draw a small round head, a little wider than tall.

Tip Leave room on the left for the beak.

  2. Step 2: Thin beak

Start on the front of the head. Draw a thin pointed beak out to the left and back.

  3. Step 3: Bright eye

Near the beak draw a round eye. Colour a black dot inside it, leaving a tiny shine.

Tip Leave the rest of the eye white.

  4. Step 4: Eyebrow stripe

Over the eye draw a thin curved eyebrow stripe, like a long leaf.

Tip The pale eyebrow is how you spot a wren.

  5. Step 5: Plump body

Start behind the head. Draw a plump egg body sloping down to the right. Stop under the chin.

Tip A wren is tiny and round, like a ball of feathers.

  6. Step 6: Cocked tail

At the back of the body draw a short tail pointing up. Make it wider at its tip.

Tip A wren holds its little tail up high.

  7. Step 7: Big wing

On the back draw a wing reaching up and back, with 4 soft bumps down its back edge.

Tip The front edge is one smooth curve.

  8. Step 8: Second wing

Start on the back, behind the head. Draw a wing standing up. Stop at the big wing.

Tip It hides a little behind the big wing.

  9. Step 9: Belly line

Start on the back of the head. Draw a long curve under the big wing. Stop under the tail.

  10. Step 10: Wing bars

From the front edge of the big wing draw 3 short curved bars. Add 2 on the other wing.

  11. Step 11: Tail bars

Draw 2 short curved bars across the tail, from one edge to the other.

  12. Step 12: Cream and sand

Colour the eyebrow cream. Colour the chest and belly a soft sand colour.

  13. Step 13: Brown and grey

Colour the beak grey. Colour the head, back, wings and tail brown. Leave the eye white.

Tip Go round the eyebrow so it stays cream.
