How to Draw a Wren

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a wren in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: round head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Round head

Near the top left, draw a big round head with a smooth dome on top.

Tip Leave room on the right and underneath for the body.

  2. Step 2: Thin beak

Start on the front of the head. Draw a slim needle beak to a point and stop on the head.

  3. Step 3: Eye and eyebrow

Behind the beak, draw a big round eye with a black dot. Just over it, draw a thin eyebrow stripe.

  4. Step 4: Plump body

Start on the back of the head. Draw a plump egg body hanging under the head. Stop under the beak.

Tip The body is narrower than the head, so the head stays big.

  5. Step 5: Tail cocked up

At the back, draw a short stubby tail cocked up like a flag. Add 2 short bars across it.

Tip A wren always holds its short tail cocked up.

  6. Step 6: Barred wing

Start under the back of the head. Draw a teardrop wing ending at the tail. Add 2 bars across it.

  7. Step 7: Front leg and toes

Start on the tummy. Draw a thin leg that gets narrower, then 3 slim curled toes. Stop on the tummy.

  8. Step 8: Back leg and toes

Start on the tummy, a thumb behind the first leg. Draw a second leg and toes. Stop on the tummy.

  9. Step 9: The branch

Start near the left edge, under the toes. Draw a branch with one twig. Stop near the right edge.

  10. Step 10: Cream stripe, sand body

Colour the eyebrow stripe cream. Colour the body around the wing a soft sand colour.

  11. Step 11: Tan legs, wood branch

Colour the beak, legs and toes tan. Colour the branch light wood brown.

  12. Step 12: Brown head and wing

Colour the head brown around the eyebrow, leaving the eye white. Colour the wing and tail brown.
