How to Draw a Water Boatman
Draw a water boatman in 12 steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a small head.
Step 1: A small head
Above the middle, draw a small egg lying on its side, with a flat bottom.
Tip We are looking straight down at the bug swimming in a pond.
Step 2: Two big eyes
In the middle of the head draw 2 big egg eyes. Colour a black dot in each, leaving a shine.
Step 3: Smile and cheeks
Below the eyes draw a small U smile with a flat top. Add 2 round cheeks, further out.
Step 4: A boat-shaped body
Start on the chin. Draw a long oval hanging down, over 2 heads long, a bit pointy at the bottom.
Step 5: Body stripes
Across the body draw 4 gentle smile lines, evenly spaced, each from the left edge to the right edge.
Step 6: Front legs
Below the head draw a short bent leg on each side, thick at the body and thin at the tip.
Step 7: Middle legs
Below the front legs draw a longer bent leg on each side, also thin at the tip.
Step 8: 2 long oar legs
From the middle of each side draw one VERY long leg out and down, ending in a long flat paddle.
Tip The oar legs are longer than the whole bug!
Step 9: Water surface and bubbles
Start at the left edge, above the head. Draw a wavy water line across to the right edge. Add bubbles.
Step 10: Pink cheeks, blue water
Go over your lines, then colour the cheeks pink and the water pale blue, all around the bug.
Step 11: Brown body, red mouth
Colour the mouth red, then the head and body wood brown around the cheeks and mouth, leaving the eyes white.
Step 12: Dark brown legs
Colour all the legs and paddles brown. Your water boatman is done!

Your finished drawing
Follow the steps above and this is where you end up: a water boatman, drawn by you.
