How to Draw a Triple Beam Balance

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a triple beam balance in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the base.

Print

  1. Step 1: The base

Low on your paper draw a long flat box with soft corners, nearly from edge to edge.

Tip Leave lots of room above it for the beams.

  2. Step 2: The post

On the base, left of the middle, draw a short post that gets a little thinner at the top.

  3. Step 3: The beam frame

On top of the post draw a long box. It reaches a long way out to the right.

Tip The post sits under the left end of the box, like a seesaw stand.

  4. Step 4: Three beams

Inside the box draw 2 long thin slots, one above the other. Now you have 3 beams.

Tip Keep the 3 beams the same thickness.

  5. Step 5: Sliding weights

Draw 3 small upright boxes, one hugging each beam. Put each one in a different place.

Tip You slide these along the beams to find out how heavy something is.

  6. Step 6: The pan

On the left draw a wide flat oval. Add a shallow U: start at one end, stop at the other.

Tip Put the oval a little higher than the top of the frame.

  7. Step 7: The arm

Start under the pan. Draw 2 lines down, then turn right and stop on the frame.

Tip The arm is a thick L that joins the middle beam.

  8. Step 8: The pointer

Start on the frame's right end. Draw a small pointy triangle beside the middle beam and stop on the frame.

  9. Step 9: The scale

Just past the pointer draw a tall thin box standing on the base. Add 3 short lines inside.

Tip When the pointer points at the middle line, the balance is level.

  10. Step 10: Ground line

Draw a ground line under the base, from well left to well right.

  11. Step 11: Grey pan

Go over your lines. Colour the pan grey and the tall scale cream.

  12. Step 12: Light blue beams

Colour the 3 beams, the frame ends and the arm light blue, around the weights. Leave the 2 slots empty.

  13. Step 13: Red weights

Colour the 3 weights and the pointer red.

  14. Step 14: Dark blue base

Colour the base and the post dark blue. Your triple beam balance is ready to weigh!
