How to Draw a Train Coming Out of a Tunnel

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a train coming out of a tunnel in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: hill and ground.

Print

  1. Step 1: Hill and ground

Draw a long flat ground line. From its left end, draw a big round hill over to its right end.

Tip Make the hill tall. The tunnel has to fit inside it.

  2. Step 2: Tunnel arch

Inside the hill, draw 2 upside-down U shapes standing on the ground, one inside the other.

Tip Keep the band between them the same width all the way round.

  3. Step 3: Stone blocks

Draw 8 short lines across the band to cut it into stone blocks, 4 on each side.

Tip Leave one block right at the top, in the middle.

  4. Step 4: Round engine front

Low in the tunnel, draw a big circle. Inside it draw a smaller circle and a tiny middle one.

Tip Leave a gap under the big circle for the buffer bar and wheels.

  5. Step 5: Buffer bar and wheels

Under the circle, draw a long box with 2 round buffers on it. Under the box add 2 thin wheels.

Tip The wheels stand on the ground line.

  6. Step 6: Funnel and cab

On top of the big circle, draw a short funnel with a wider rim. Behind them, draw a tall box.

Tip The box is the cab. Its sides stop at the buffer bar.

  7. Step 7: Roof and windows

On top of the cab, draw a curved roof that sticks out each side. Add 2 round windows.

  8. Step 8: The rails

From each wheel, draw a rail down towards you. The 2 rails get wider apart as they come closer.

  9. Step 9: Three sleepers

Draw 3 long bars under the rails. Each one is longer and fatter than the one above.

Tip Rub out the bar lines inside the rails.

  10. Step 10: Yellow and grey

Colour the buffer bar and tiny middle circle yellow. Colour the arch, roof, buffers and rails grey.

  11. Step 11: Blue and green

Colour the 2 windows light blue. Colour the hill green, all around the stone arch.

  12. Step 12: Red and brown

Colour the cab red, around the windows. Colour the 3 sleepers brown, between the rails too.

  13. Step 13: Dark tunnel

Colour the round front, funnel and wheels dark grey. Colour the tunnel black and your train is out!
