How to Draw a Top Hat
Draw a top hat in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: top of the hat.
Step 1: Top of the hat
Near the top, draw a wide flat oval, about half as wide as the paper, for the hat's top.
Tip Leave lots of room under it: the whole hat hangs from this oval.
Step 2: Crown sides
From each end of the oval, draw a tall line down, stopping past halfway.
Tip Lean both lines in the same small amount, so the hat stands up straight.
Step 3: Crown bottom
Start at the bottom of the left line. Draw a smile curve across and stop at the right line's bottom.
Step 4: Wide brim
Start on the crown's left, above the bottom. Swing a wide oval out and under, stopping on the right side.
Step 5: Thick brim
Start at the brim's left edge. Draw a big smile curve under the brim, stopping at the right edge.
Tip Keep the gap the same all the way round: a thick rolled brim.
Step 6: Ribbon band
Start on the crown's left, 2 fingers up. Draw a smile curve across and stop on the right side.
Step 7: Twinkles
Draw a big 4-point twinkle off the hat's top right and a smaller one off the crown's left.
Step 8: The table
Draw a straight table line under the brim, from well left to well right, just touching it.
Step 9: Twinkles and band
Colour the twinkles yellow and the ribbon band red.
Step 10: Black hat
Colour the rest of the hat black around the band. Your top hat is done!
Tip Press softly so your lines still show.
