How to Draw Timpani
Draw timpani in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the kettle.
Step 1: The kettle
In the middle draw a big bowl: a line across the top and a deep round curve under it.
Tip A timpani is a huge copper drum with a pedal that changes its note.
Step 2: Two big eyes
On the kettle draw 2 big egg eyes. Colour a black dot in each, leaving a white shine.
Step 3: Smile and cheeks
Under the eyes draw a U smile. Add a small flat oval cheek beside each end.
Step 4: Drum head
On top of the kettle draw a long flat oval, as wide as the top.
Step 5: Hoop and tabs
Just under the head draw a curved hoop line from side to side. Add 4 little tabs hanging under it.
Step 6: Legs
Under the kettle draw 2 legs slanting out to the ground, like a tall A.
Step 7: Pedal
Between the legs draw a slanted foot pedal, from the ground up into the right leg.
Step 8: Two mallets
Draw 2 mallets on the drum, each a round ball on the head with a stick slanting up and out.
Step 9: Ground and notes
Draw a ground line under the legs from left to right. Add a music note on each side.
Step 10: Cream head, pink cheeks
Go over your lines. Colour the drum head cream around the mallets, and the cheeks pink.
Step 11: Grey balls, copper kettle
Colour the balls and tabs grey, then the kettle ginger copper around the face and tabs. Leave the eyes white.
Step 12: Brown sticks, slate legs
Colour the mallet sticks brown, the legs and pedal slate grey, and the notes black. Boom!
