How to Draw a Thorny Devil
Draw a thorny devil in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: round head.
Step 1: Round head
On the left draw a round head like a pebble on its side, a little narrower at the nose.
Tip Leave room on the right: the body will be much bigger.
Step 2: Big eye
Near the front of the head draw a big eye with a black dot and a shine. Add a nostril.
Step 3: Friendly smile
Start at the nose. Draw a long smile under the eye, curling up and stopping on the cheek.
Step 4: Two horns
On top of the head draw 2 pointy horns, one over the eye and one behind it.
Tip Each horn starts and stops on the head line.
Step 5: Low humped body
Start behind the head. Draw a long low hump, a round bottom, then the tummy back to the head.
Tip The body is about twice as long as the head.
Step 6: Long tail
From the back of the body draw a long tail that gets thinner to a soft point. Come back underneath.
Tip Fat where it joins the body, thin at the tip.
Step 7: Two near legs
On the body's side draw a bent leg, round at the top, down to a flat foot. Do another behind.
Tip Rub out the tummy line inside each leg. Add 2 toe lines on each foot.
Step 8: Far legs and sand
Draw 1 leg peeking out below the chest and 1 below the tail. Add a long ground line underneath.
Step 9: Thorns all over
Along the back draw 7 pointy thorns, biggest in the middle. Add 2 small thorns on the tail.
Tip Leave a little gap between thorns so the back line shows.
Step 10: Blotches
Draw 4 oval blotches on the side of the body, above the legs.
Step 11: Sandy thorns
Go over your lines. Colour the 2 horns and all the thorns a pale sand colour.
Step 12: Ginger head and legs
Colour the head and the 2 near legs ginger. Leave the eye white.
Step 13: Ginger body and tail
Colour the body, the tail and the 2 far legs ginger too, around the blotches.
Step 14: Brown blotches
Colour the 4 blotches brown. Your thorny devil is done!
