How to Draw a Foal
Draw a foal in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.
Step 1: The head
Near the top left draw a sideways head like a peanut: a big round cheek and a smaller nose.
Tip The nose end leans down to the left. Leave room on the right for the body.
Step 2: The ears
Draw 2 pointy ears standing up on the head, a leaf inside the front ear, and a hair tuft.
Tip The back ear peeks out from behind the front one.
Step 3: Eye and nose
Draw 1 big eye. From the nose top, curve a line down to the chin. Add a nostril and smile.
Tip Give the eye a black dot and a white shine. Only 1 eye: we see the side.
Step 4: The neck
Slope 2 neck lines down: one from behind the ears, one from under the round cheek. Stop near the middle.
Tip The front line ends much lower, at the chest, so the neck gets wider as it goes down.
Step 5: The body
From the neck draw a short bean body: a straight back, a round bottom, then the tummy to the chest.
Step 6: The mane
Start behind the ears. Draw a mane of soft bumps along the top of the neck, down to the back.
Tip A baby horse's mane is short and fluffy, and it stands up like a brush.
Step 7: Two legs
Draw a low ground line. Add a long front leg under the chest and a back leg under the bottom.
Tip Give each leg a little knee bump and a small flat hoof on the ground.
Step 8: The far legs
Draw 2 thinner legs peeking out from behind: one by the front leg, one by the back leg.
Tip Only draw the parts you can see.
Step 9: The tail
From the top of the round bottom draw a short tail sticking out and down, ending in 2 soft points.
Step 10: Nose and ears
Go over your lines. Colour the nose patch cream and the ear inside peach. Leave the eye white.
Step 11: Colour it ginger
Colour the head, ears, neck, body and legs ginger, around the cream nose and peach ear. Skip the hooves.
Step 12: Mane, tail and hooves
Colour the tuft, mane and tail brown, and the 4 hooves slate. Your foal is done!
