How to Draw a Thali

10 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw a thali in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the round tray.

Print

  1. Step 1: The round tray

In the middle of your paper draw one big circle, nearly filling the page. Draw a second circle just inside.

Tip A thali is a big metal tray full of little bowls, seen from above.

  2. Step 2: Four little bowls

Near the rim draw 4 bowls: big at the top, medium top right, small on the left, tiny bottom left.

  3. Step 3: Inside the bowls

Inside each bowl draw a smaller circle for the food.

  4. Step 4: Rice and roti

In the middle draw a round mound of rice. Lower right, draw a half-moon roti with a fold line.

  5. Step 5: Lemon slice

Under the left bowl draw a half-moon lemon slice. Add 2 lines from the flat edge's middle to the curve.

  6. Step 6: Bits and grains

Scatter short tilted dashes in the 3 bigger bowls. Add a swirl in the tiny bowl and 4 rice grains.

  7. Step 7: Yellow dal and lemon

Colour inside the big top bowl yellow for dal, and the lemon slice yellow too.

  8. Step 8: Tan roti, white yogurt

Colour the roti tan. Leave the tiny bowl, the rice and the bowl rims white.

  9. Step 9: Orange curry, green veg

Colour inside the top right bowl orange for curry, and inside the small left bowl green.

  10. Step 10: Grey tray

Go over your lines, then colour the tray grey, going round everything on it. Your thali is ready!
