How to Draw a Tawny Frogmouth
Draw a tawny frogmouth in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: stocky body.
Step 1: Stocky body
Start low on the left. Draw up, over a wide round top, and down the other side. Stop low right.
Tip Head and body are one shape, like a broken branch.
Step 2: Two big eyes
High on the body, draw 2 big round eyes a thumb apart. Fill each with a big black dot.
Step 3: Wide frog beak
Under the eyes, draw a wide flat beak, smiling up at the ends, with a tiny hooked tip.
Tip The wide flat beak is the frogmouth's signature.
Step 4: Bristles
At each corner of the beak, draw 1 short curved bristle sweeping out and up.
Step 5: Folded wings
Start on each side below the eye. Draw a wing down and stop at the bottom. Add a feather line.
Step 6: Chest streaks
Down the middle of the chest, draw 3 short curved streaks, not in a straight line.
Step 7: Feet
At the bottom, under each wing, draw 3 round toes hanging down like a tiny claw.
Step 8: The branch
Behind the toes, draw a long branch with round ends, a bit thinner on the right. Add a knot.
Step 9: Stiff tail
Start under the branch. Draw a short tail down to a round tip and back up to the branch.
Step 10: Grey body, yellow eyes
Colour the eyes yellow around the dots. Colour the body, beak and tail grey around them, not the wings.
Step 11: Dark wings, wood branch
Colour the branch light brown. Colour the wings and feet dark grey, pressing hard.
