How to Draw a Sundial
Draw a sundial in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the dial.
Step 1: The dial
Draw a wide flat oval up high, then a U edge under it from end to end.
Tip Make it flat and wide, like a plate seen from a little above.
Step 2: The stand
Under the middle of the dial draw a tall box down. Add a wide flat foot at the bottom.
Step 3: Two big eyes
Near the top of the stand draw 2 big egg eyes close together. Colour a big black dot in each.
Step 4: Smile and cheeks
Under the eyes draw a U smile, and a small oval cheek under each eye.
Step 5: The pointer
On the dial draw a tall triangle: straight up from the middle, then slanting down to the back edge.
Tip The pointer's shadow is what tells the time.
Step 6: Hour marks
Draw 7 short hour lines along the front of the oval, pointing to the middle and not touching the edge.
Step 7: The sun
In the top left corner draw a small sun: a circle with 8 short rays round it.
Step 8: The ground
Draw a long ground line under the foot, from well left to well right.
Step 9: Grass tufts
On the ground each side of the foot, draw 3 little curvy grass blades.
Step 10: Stand and sun
Colour the stand and foot sandy yellow around the face, and the sun yellow. Leave the eyes white.
Step 11: Cheeks and dial
Colour the cheeks pink, and the dial and its thick edge light grey.
Step 12: Dark pointer
Go over your lines, then colour the pointer dark grey. Your sundial is telling the time!

Your finished drawing
Follow the steps above and this is where you end up: a sundial, drawn by you.
