How to Draw a Steller’s Jay
Draw a steller’s jay in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: head and tall crest.
Step 1: Head and tall crest
Near the top left draw a big round head. At the back, sweep the line up into a tall crest.
Tip The crest is tall and pointed, like a party hat leaning back.
Step 2: Stubby beak
Start on the front of the head. Draw a short fat triangle beak out left, back to the head.
Step 3: One big eye
Behind the beak draw a big round eye. Fill it with a black dot and leave a white shine.
Step 4: Plump body
From the back of the head draw a curve down to the tail, round a belly, up to the chin.
Tip The body is narrower than the head, so the head stays big.
Step 5: Fan tail
From the back end draw a fan pointing down and back, wide at the end.
Step 6: Wing and hood line
From the head draw a wing line down to the rump. Curve a line across the chest to it.
Tip The chest line starts on the front of the chest and stops on the wing.
Step 7: Dark bars
Draw 3 short bars across the wing and 3 across the tail. Each bar goes from edge to edge.
Step 8: Front leg and toes
Under the tummy draw a short skinny leg, then 3 chubby toes curling down like a mitten.
Step 9: Back leg and toes
A thumb behind the first leg draw a second leg and toes the same way. Leave a gap between.
Step 10: Branch
Under the toes draw a long stick with round ends. The toes wrap over its front.
Step 11: Blue feathers
Colour the tummy, the wing and the fan tail blue.
Step 12: Brown branch
Colour the branch brown, going around the toes.
Step 13: Black head and legs
Colour the head, crest, chest and beak black. Colour the legs black too. Leave the eye white.
