How to Draw a Stegosaurus

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a stegosaurus in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big arched body.

Print

  1. Step 1: Big arched body

Start on the left. Draw a tall hill over the back and tail, then the tummy back to the front.

Tip Leave a gap at the front for the head. The tail stays above the ground.

  2. Step 2: Small head

In the gap at the front, draw a small round head. Start on the back line, end on the tummy.

Tip A stegosaurus head is tiny, about a third as tall as the body.

  3. Step 3: Eye, smile, nostril

Draw a big eye above the middle of the head. Draw a smile from the snout to under the eye.

Tip Add a black pupil with a shine, and a nostril dot on the snout.

  4. Step 4: Tummy band

Start on the tummy under the chin. Draw a band line just above it, ending at the tail tip.

Tip Keep it close to the tummy at the front and a finger above it under the body.

  5. Step 5: Big back plates

Along the back, draw a row of 6 pointy kite plates. Each starts and ends on the back line.

Tip Small at the neck and tail, biggest over the hips.

  6. Step 6: Tail spikes

Near the tail end, draw 2 long thin spikes. Each starts on the tail and comes back to it.

  7. Step 7: Front leg

Start on the band line under the chest. Draw a stumpy leg with a flat foot, back to the band.

Tip Add 3 round toenails. Rub out the lines inside the leg.

  8. Step 8: Back leg

Start on the band line under the hip. Draw a chunkier leg with a flat foot, back to the band.

Tip Add 3 round toenails. Keep both feet level on the ground.

  9. Step 9: The far legs

Draw a second leg peeking out behind the front leg, and another peeking out in front of the back leg.

Tip The far legs are half hidden, so all 4 legs show.

  10. Step 10: The ground

Draw one long straight line under all the feet, right across the paper. The tail floats above it.

  11. Step 11: Orange plates, cream spikes

Colour all the plates orange. Colour the tail spikes, toenails and the tummy band cream.

Tip Green body, orange plates: the plates should glow.

  12. Step 12: Colour it green

Go over your lines. Colour the head, body, tail and legs green, around the plates and band.

Tip Press harder on the 2 far legs. Leave the eye white.
