How to Draw a Steel Drum
Draw a steel drum in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the pan top.
Step 1: The pan top
A little above the middle draw one big wide oval, almost as wide as the paper but very flat.
Tip A steel drum is a wide shallow pan, so keep the oval very flat.
Step 2: The shallow side
From each end of the oval draw a short line down. Join them with a curve along the bottom.
Step 3: Big eyes
On the front of the side band draw 2 big egg eyes with a gap between. Add black dots.
Step 4: The rim
Inside the big oval draw a second oval a finger in from the edge, for the rim.
Step 5: Smile and cheeks
Between the eyes, a little lower, draw a small U smile, and a small oval cheek out on each side.
Step 6: The note dents
Inside the rim draw 6 small ovals in a ring.
Tip Each dent is a little bowl hammered into the metal: it plays a note.
Step 7: The stand
Under the pan draw 3 thin tube legs almost to the bottom, the outer ones slanting out.
Step 8: 2 mallets
Lay 2 thin sticks slanting in from the top, each ending in a round tip between the dents.
Step 9: Ground and notes
Draw a long ground line under the legs from far left to far right. Add a music note each side.
Step 10: Teal top
Colour inside the rim teal, leaving the dents and the mallets white.
Step 11: Silver pan and stand
Colour the rim ring, side band and 3 legs grey, going around the teal, the sticks and the face.
Tip Keep the eyes white.
Step 12: Red tips, wood sticks
Colour the mallet tips red and the sticks wood brown.
Step 13: Pink cheeks, blue notes
Go over your lines, then colour the cheeks pink and the music notes blue. Ting-a-ling!
