How to Draw a Sky Lantern
Draw a sky lantern in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the paper lantern.
Step 1: The paper lantern
In the middle draw a tall rounded lantern, wide near the top and narrower down to a flat bottom.
Tip The bottom is open, like an upside-down paper bag.
Step 2: The bottom ring
Along the flat bottom draw a flat oval, then a smaller oval inside it for the open ring.
Step 3: 2 big eyes
On the lantern draw 2 big egg eyes. Colour a big black dot in each and leave the rest white.
Step 4: Smile and cheeks
Under the eyes draw a U smile. Add a round cheek beside each end.
Step 5: Wires and flame
Inside the ring draw a little burner with 2 wires to the rim. Add a small teardrop flame on it.
Step 6: Paper seams
Draw a gentle curve down each side of the lantern. Start at the top line and stop on the ring.
Step 7: Glow lines
Draw 4 short glow lines pointing out from the lantern, 2 on top and 1 on each side.
Step 8: Moon and stars
In the night sky draw a crescent moon on the left and 3 little stars around.
Step 9: Pink cheeks
Colour the cheeks pink.
Step 10: Flame, moon and ring
Colour the flame and the moon yellow. Colour the ring and the burner grey.
Step 11: Orange paper
Go over your lines. Colour the lantern orange around the face, and inside the ring dark grey around the flame.
Tip Your sky lantern is ready to float away!
