How to Draw a Sidewinder

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a sidewinder in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big round head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Big round head

In the top left, draw a big round head like an egg lying down. Leave room below for the body.

  2. Step 2: Two big eyes

In the middle of the head, draw 2 big egg eyes. Colour big black dots, leaving white shines.

  3. Step 3: Two little horns

On top of the head, above each eye, draw a small pointy horn leaning out.

Tip A sidewinder has a little horn over each eye.

  4. Step 4: Nostrils and smile

Dot 2 nostrils under the eyes. Start under the left eye and draw a wide smile to the right eye.

  5. Step 5: Forked tongue

From the middle of the smile, draw a short tongue just past the chin. Split the end into 2 points.

  6. Step 6: Curvy neck

From the right cheek, draw 2 lines side by side, looping round to the right and back under the chin.

Tip Keep the 2 lines the same distance apart all the way.

  7. Step 7: Long body

Start at the ends of the neck lines. Loop round to the left, along the ground, then up, getting thinner.

Tip The whole body makes a big letter S.

  8. Step 8: The rattle

On top of the tail, stack 4 round rattle beads, each one a little smaller.

  9. Step 9: The ground

Draw a straight ground line under the snake, from the left edge to the right edge.

  10. Step 10: Back blotches

Draw 6 ovals along the middle of the body: 3 on the neck loop and 3 lower down.

  11. Step 11: Sandy snake

Colour the head and body pale yellow, going around the ovals. Leave the eyes, horns, tongue and rattle white.

  12. Step 12: Horns and rattle

Colour the 2 horns and the 4 rattle beads light brown.

  13. Step 13: Blotches and tongue

Colour the 6 ovals dark brown and the tongue red, and your sidewinder is done.
