How to Draw a Shape Train
Draw a shape train in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: tall rectangle cab.
Step 1: Tall rectangle cab
On the right half of your paper draw a tall rectangle standing up for the cab.
Tip This train is built from shapes: rectangles, circles and a triangle!
Step 2: A square window
In the top half of the cab draw a square window, a finger in from the sides.
Step 3: Two big eyes
In the window draw 2 round eyes close together. Colour a black dot in each with a white shine.
Step 4: A smile
Under the eyes draw a small U smile from under the left eye to under the right eye.
Step 5: A long rectangle
To the left of the cab draw a long rectangle lying down for the engine, level with the cab's bottom.
Step 6: Chimney and roof
Draw a small standing rectangle on the engine's front for the chimney. Add a flat roof on the cab.
Step 7: Three circle wheels
Under the train draw 3 round wheels: 2 under the engine, 1 under the cab. Add a circle in each.
Step 8: Triangle and smoke
Under the engine's front draw a triangle pointing forward. From the chimney top draw 3 smoke puffs rising up.
Step 9: The ground
Draw a ground line under the wheels from the left side across to the right side, touching the wheels.
Step 10: Sky window, grey wheels
Colour the window sky blue, leaving the eyes white. Colour the wheels and the front triangle grey.
Step 11: Red train
Go over your lines, then colour the cab, the engine, the chimney and the roof red, going round the window.
Step 12: Black hubs, white smoke
Colour the little hub circles black and leave the smoke puffs white. Your shape train is done!
