How to Draw a Sailfish
Draw a sailfish in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: long body.
Step 1: Long body
Start left of the middle. Draw a long back curve to a thin tail end, then the tummy under it.
Tip Leave the front open for the sword.
Step 2: Pointed sword
Start on the back at the open front. Slope out to a long thin sword, then back to the tummy.
Tip Let the snout narrow smoothly into the sword, with no line across it.
Step 3: Eye and smile
Draw a big round eye behind the snout. Add a little smile on the snout, under the eye.
Step 4: Crescent tail
From the back, swing a tall lobe up, in to a dent. Draw a matching lobe down to the belly.
Step 5: Huge sail
Start above the eye. Sweep a huge sail up and over, down to the back near the tail.
Tip The sail is taller than the body.
Step 6: Gill and sail spots
Behind the eye, draw a short C for the gill. Dot 5 small round spots across the sail.
Step 7: Long side fin
From the gill line, draw a long leaf fin sweeping back to a soft point, and back to the gill.
Step 8: Belly streamer
Start on the tummy under the side fin. Draw a long thin streamer back to a point, and back.
Step 9: Bubbles
Above the sword, draw 3 bubbles floating up in a gentle curve: small, bigger, biggest.
Step 10: Sand and seaweed
Draw a wavy sand line from edge to edge. Add 2 seaweed leaves on the left, one on the right.
Step 11: Sand and light blue
Colour the sand sandy, and the sail spots and bubbles light blue.
Step 12: Pink cheek, green seaweed
Colour a soft pink cheek under the eye, and the seaweed green.
Step 13: Blue fish, dark fins
Colour the body and sword blue around the cheek, and the sail, tail and fins dark blue around the spots.
Tip Leave the eye white.
