How to Draw a Cicada
Draw a cicada in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a wide head.
Step 1: A wide head
Near the top of your paper draw an egg lying on its side for the head, with a round chin.
Tip Leave lots of room below for the body and the long wings.
Step 2: Eyes at the corners
Right out at each side of the head draw a big round eye with a black dot in it.
Step 3: Smile and cheeks
Between the eyes draw a small U smile from eye to eye. Add a small round cheek beside each end.
Step 4: A stout body
From under the left eye draw a fat egg body down to a point, back up under the right eye.
Tip The body is widest at the shoulders and tapers like a teardrop.
Step 5: Three stripes
Under the head draw a smile line across the body, side to side. Add 2 more, each a thumb lower.
Step 6: Long folded wings
From under the head draw a long wing down each side, round past the tail and back behind the body.
Tip Cicada wings are longer than the body and lie folded like a tent.
Step 7: Wing veins
Inside each wing draw 2 thin lines from the body down toward the round end, like leaf veins.
Step 8: Front legs
Under the head draw a short leg each side: out to a knee, down to a point, and back.
Step 9: Middle and back legs
Draw 2 more legs each side the same way, between the stripes, a little lower each time. 6 legs!
Step 10: Green head and body
Colour the cheeks pink, then the head and body green around them, leaving the eyes white.
Step 11: Clear wings, dark legs
Colour the 2 long wings light blue so they look see-through, and all 6 legs dark grey.

Follow the steps above and this is where you end up: a cicada, drawn by you.
