How to Draw a Quetzalcoatl
Draw a quetzalcoatl in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.
Step 1: The head
Top left, draw the head like a sideways egg, with the snout on the left.
Tip Quetzalcoatl is a feathered snake from the old stories of Mexico.
Step 2: Two big eyes
Left of the middle, draw 2 tall round eyes close together. Add black dots with a white shine.
Step 3: Smile and nostril
Under the eyes, draw a wide U smile. Dot a nostril on the snout.
Step 4: Feather collar
Behind the head, draw 7 long feathers fanning out like sun rays, from the top round to the bottom.
Tip Each feather is a long leaf shape. Leave a small gap between them.
Step 5: Feather lines
Draw a line down the middle of each feather. Start at the head and stop before the tip.
Tip The middle line is what makes a leaf shape look like a feather.
Step 6: Long S body
From the collar, draw a long snake body: right, round and back left, then right again to a thin tail.
Tip Keep the body fat near the head and thinner toward the tail.
Step 7: Belly line
From the collar, draw a line inside the body, near its lower edge, all the way to the tail.
Step 8: Tail feathers
On the tip of the tail, draw 3 feathers fanning out. Add a line down the middle of each.
Step 9: Back feathers
Along the top of the body, draw 5 small feathers, leaning toward the tail.
Tip Put 3 on the top bend and 2 on the bottom bend.
Step 10: Yellow belly
Colour the belly stripe yellow, from the collar to the tip of the tail.
Tip Do not colour over the collar feathers.
Step 11: Red feathers
Colour 4 collar feathers red: the first one on top, then every second one.
Step 12: Blue feathers
Colour the 3 white collar feathers blue. Colour the tail feathers and the back feathers blue too.
Step 13: Green serpent
Colour the head and the body green. Leave the eyes white. Your feathered serpent is done!
