How to Draw a Nuthatch

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a nuthatch in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: head pointing down.

Print

  1. Step 1: Head pointing down

Low on the page, right of the middle, draw a big round head. Leave room above for the body.

Tip A nuthatch climbs down a tree head first, so its head is at the bottom.

  2. Step 2: Straight pointed beak

On the bottom right of the head, draw a long pointed beak sticking down. Add a mouth line.

  3. Step 3: Eye and eye stripe

Next to the beak draw a big round eye with a black dot. Add a stripe across the head.

Tip The stripe is 2 lines from the beak to the back of the head. They hide behind the eye.

  4. Step 4: Plump body going up

Start on top of the head at the left. Draw a big egg body up, over, and down to the head.

Tip The egg is a little fatter near the head.

  5. Step 5: Tummy line

Start on top of the head, on the left. Draw a line up the body and stop at the top.

Tip The tummy is the side nearest the tree.

  6. Step 6: Short tail

On top of the body, draw a short tail sticking up: narrow at the body, wider at the end.

    Tip Add 2 feather lines.

  7. Step 7: Folded wing

On the right side of the body, draw a teardrop wing: round near the head, pointed near the tail.

Tip The wing sits on the body, not on the head. Add 2 feather lines.

  8. Step 8: Gripping feet

From the middle of the tummy side, draw 2 short legs reaching left, close together. Give each 3 spread toes.

Tip One foot sits a little higher than the other.

  9. Step 9: Tree trunk

On the left, draw a wide tree trunk from the top of the page to the bottom, behind the toes.

Tip Its right edge passes behind the toes. Add 2 little bark curves.

  10. Step 10: Soft blue back

Colour the head on the right of the stripe and the back of the body soft blue. Leave the cheek white.

Tip Leave the eye white. Do not colour the wing yet.

  11. Step 11: Rusty tummy

Colour the tummy side of the body, nearest the tree, rusty orange.

  12. Step 12: Dark grey wing

Colour the wing, the tail, the beak and the feet dark grey. Fill the eye stripe in black.

  13. Step 13: Brown tree

Colour the tree trunk brown around the toes. Go over your lines and your nuthatch is done!
