How to Draw a Ptarmigan
Draw a ptarmigan in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: round head.
Step 1: Round head
Near the top left, draw a round head, a little wider than tall.
Tip Leave room on the right and below for a very round body.
Step 2: Tiny beak
Draw a tiny fat beak on the front. For the mouth, start at its tip and stop at the head.
Step 3: Eye and eyebrow
Draw a big round eye with a black dot and a white speck. Add a curved eyebrow on top.
Tip The red eyebrow is how you spot a ptarmigan in the snow.
Step 4: Plump body
Start at the back of the head. Draw a very round body, under the tummy and up to the chin.
Tip Make it as round as a snowball.
Step 5: Folded wing
On the side, draw a teardrop wing: round at the shoulder, pointed at the back. Add 2 feather lines.
Step 6: Short tail
Behind the wing tip, draw a short tail pointing back, wider at its round end.
Tip In winter the tail is the only black part.
Step 7: Fluffy feet
Under the tummy, draw 2 short fluffy legs. Give each foot 3 round toes.
Tip Feathery feet work like snowshoes.
Step 8: Snow mound
Draw a ground line. From its left end, draw a low snow hump behind the feet to its right end.
Step 9: Blue snow
Colour the snow mound very light blue, around the feet.
Step 10: Red eyebrow
Colour the eyebrow bright red.
Step 11: Dark beak and tail
Colour the beak dark grey and the tail black. Leave the eye and all the feathers white.
