How to Draw a Butterfly Side View
Draw a butterfly side view in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.
Step 1: The head
On the left of your paper, a bit below the middle, draw a big egg head lying on its side.
Tip Leave lots of room above: the wings stand up tall.
Step 2: Eye, smile and cheek
Draw one big eye with a black dot and a shine. Add a small smile and a cheek.
Tip We see the butterfly from the side, so it shows one eye.
Step 3: The body
Start at the top of the head's back. Draw a fat body getting thinner, round its tip, and back to the head.
Tip Fat by the head and thin at the tail, like a carrot.
Step 4: The back wing
Start on the body behind the head. Draw a big round wing out over the tail and back to the body.
Step 5: The tall wing
Start on the body near the head. Draw a tall wing up, round the top, and stop at the back wing.
Tip The wings are folded together, standing up like a sail.
Step 6: Two antennae
Start on top of the head. Draw 2 curved feelers up, each ending in a small ball.
Step 7: Body stripes
Draw 3 short curved stripes across the thin end of the body, from the top edge to the bottom.
Step 8: Wing spots
Draw 2 round spots on the tall wing, a big one and a small one. Add 1 on the back wing.
Step 9: The stem
Under the butterfly draw a long thin stem with round ends, lying almost flat.
Tip Leave a gap between the body and the stem for the legs.
Step 10: Three legs
Start under the body. Draw 3 thin bent legs down, and stop each one on the stem.
Tip Each leg has one bend, like a tiny knee.
Step 11: Two leaves
At each end of the stem draw a pointed leaf growing up and out, with a line inside.
Step 12: Yellow spots, pink cheek
Go over your lines. Colour the 3 wing spots yellow and the cheek pink.
Step 13: Orange wings
Colour both wings orange, going around the yellow spots.
Step 14: Green stem, purple body
Colour the stem and leaves green. Colour the head, body and antenna balls purple around the cheek. Leave the eye white.
