How to Draw a Plant Life Cycle
Draw a plant life cycle in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a sunflower seed.
Step 1: A sunflower seed
At the top draw a fat seed with a pointed tip. Draw a thin stripe inside it.
Tip Every sunflower starts as one seed like this.
Step 2: The seed sprouts
On the right draw a little hill of soil. Draw a short stem growing up from the top.
Tip The seed is under the soil. Water and warmth wake it up.
Step 3: Two seed leaves
At the top of the short stem draw 2 round leaves, one on each side, like a letter V.
Step 4: A taller stem
At the bottom draw another hill of soil. Draw a taller stem growing up from it.
Step 5: Four pointed leaves
Draw 2 big pointed leaves low on the tall stem, and 2 smaller ones higher up.
Tip Each leaf starts on the stem and points up and out.
Step 6: A flower bud
On top of the tall stem draw a bud: a small egg with a pointed top.
Step 7: The flower's middle
On the left, up high, draw a circle for the middle of the sunflower.
Tip Leave room all round the circle for the petals.
Step 8: Petals all round
Draw 10 pointed petals all the way round the circle, each one touching the next.
Tip Draw the top and bottom petals first, then 4 more down each side.
Step 9: Stem and soil
Under the flower draw a hill of soil. Join the flower to the hill with a long stem.
Step 10: Two big leaves
Halfway down the long stem draw 2 big pointed leaves, one on each side.
Step 11: Arrows round the ring
Draw a curved arrow from each picture to the next: seed, sprout, young plant, flower, then back to the seed.
Tip The flower makes new seeds, so the story starts again.
Step 12: Yellow petals
Colour all the sunflower's petals yellow.
Step 13: Green stems and leaves
Colour every stem and leaf green, and the bud too.
Step 14: Brown soil, black seed
Colour the soil and the flower's middle brown. Colour the seed black around its stripe, leaving the stripe white.
