How to Draw a Pet Rat

Draw a pet rat in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: pointy head.

Step 1: Pointy head
Draw a head like an egg on its side: round at the right, with a long snout pointing left.
Tip Start near the top of your paper. Leave room below for the body.
Step 2: Small round ears
On top of the head draw 2 small round ears. Draw an oval inside each one.
Tip The left ear hides a little behind the head. Rub out the head line inside the right ear.
Step 3: Eye and nose
Draw 1 big eye with a black dot and a white shine. Add a round nose on the snout's tip.
Tip Only 1 eye: we see the rat from the side.
Step 4: Smile and whiskers
Under the nose draw a small smile. Start beside the nose and draw 3 whiskers across the cheek.
Tip Keep the whiskers inside the head.
Step 5: Round back
Draw a ground line. Start behind the head and draw a long round back down to the ground.
Tip The back bulges out to the right, like a pear.
Step 6: Back leg and foot
Start on the back. Draw a round thigh and stop near the ground. Add a long foot with 2 toes.
Tip The foot points the same way as the snout.
Step 7: Chest and tummy
Start under the chin and draw the chest down to the foot. Draw a tummy line beside it.
Tip The tummy line stops on the thigh.
Step 8: Arm and hand
On the chest draw an arm that bends and reaches left. Add a round hand with 2 finger lines.
Tip Rub out the chest and tummy lines inside the arm and hand.
Step 9: Second hand
Under the first hand draw a second round hand with 1 finger line. Add the far foot peeking out.
Tip Rub out the chest line inside the second hand.
Step 10: Long thick tail
Start low on the back. Draw a long thick tail along the ground, curling up to a round tip.
Tip The tail gets thinner towards the tip.
Step 11: Cream and pink
Colour the tummy cream. Colour the nose, ear insides, hands, feet and tail pink.
Tip Leave the eye white.
Step 12: Brown fur
Colour the head, ears, arm and body brown, around the cream tummy and the pink parts.
