How to Draw a Pencil
Draw a pencil in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the barrel.
Step 1: The barrel
Start near the top. Draw 2 long lines down, leaning left, joined across the top. Stop past the middle.
Tip The pencil leans like a ladder on a wall: top right, bottom left.
Step 2: Sharp point
From each side's bottom, draw a long slanted line. They meet in a sharp tip. Add a small lead line.
Tip The point is long, about two thirds as long as the barrel.
Step 3: Happy face
Inside the barrel, above the middle, draw 2 big round eyes with black dots. Add a wide U smile.
Step 4: Wavy collar
Start at the bottom of the left side. Draw 3 wavy bumps hanging down, across to the right side.
Tip This is where the yellow paint stops and the wood begins.
Step 5: Metal band
From each top corner, draw a line up and join them. Add a middle line, and a shine line below.
Tip Keep the shine line short, high on the left, away from the face.
Step 6: Plump eraser
On the band, draw 2 tiny lines up. From the left one, draw a plump hill over to the right.
Step 7: Rosy cheeks
Draw a small oval cheek beside each end of the smile, well inside the barrel.
Step 8: A squiggle
Start near the bottom left. Draw a gentle wavy line that finishes on the sharp tip. The pencil is writing!
Step 9: Yellow barrel, peach cheeks
Colour the cheeks peach. Colour the barrel yellow around them, down to the wavy collar, leaving the eyes white.
Step 10: Pink eraser, tan wood
Colour the eraser pink, and the sharpened wooden point tan, up to the wavy collar.
Step 11: Grey band, black lead
Colour the metal band grey and the lead at the very tip black. Then go over all your lines.
