How to Draw an Oryx

17 steps · Tricky · about 13 min

Draw an oryx in 17 steps, about 13 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: tall egg head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Tall egg head

A third of the way down, on the left, draw a tall egg head, wider at the top.

Tip Leave lots of room above. The horns will be longer than the head.

  2. Step 2: Pointed ears

On each side of the head draw a leaf ear pointing out and up, with a small leaf inside.

Tip The left ear is a little smaller.

  3. Step 3: Big eyes

On the top half of the head, a little to the left, draw 2 big oval eyes with black dots.

Tip Leave a tiny white shine in each eye.

  4. Step 4: Snout and smile

Under the left eye draw a snout poking past the head. From its nose draw down, stopping at a smile.

Tip Colour the nose black. Rub out the head line inside the snout.

  5. Step 5: Forehead patch

Above the eyes draw a curved line across the forehead, from the left edge to the right edge.

  6. Step 6: Two spear horns

On top of the head draw 2 very long, straight horns, side by side, ending in sharp points.

Tip Each horn is longer than the head is tall.

  7. Step 7: Horn rings

Draw 3 short lines across each horn, from edge to edge, in the lower half.

  8. Step 8: Neck and back

Start below the right ear. Draw the neck down, a long back, and stop half way round the bottom.

  9. Step 9: Front leg

Draw a ground line. From under the chin, draw the chest and a leg down to a hoof, then up.

Tip The leg is wide at the top and thin lower down.

  10. Step 10: Tummy and back leg

From the front leg draw a deep tummy. Then a round thigh down to a hoof and up again.

Tip The back leg bends back half way down.

  11. Step 11: Far legs

Under the tummy draw 2 more slim legs peeking out, one behind each leg you drew.

Tip All 4 hooves stand on the ground line.

  12. Step 12: Four hooves

Draw a short curved line across each leg, just above the ground, to make 4 hooves.

  13. Step 13: Long tail

On the bottom draw a long thin tail hanging down to a leaf-shaped tuft. Add a short line across it.

Tip The tuft reaches nearly down to the hooves.

  14. Step 14: Side band

Start where the front leg meets the tummy. Draw a low hill line, stopping at the back leg.

  15. Step 15: Peach and sandy grey

Colour the ear middles peach. Then colour the ears, neck, body, legs and tail sandy grey.

Tip Leave the face, the side band, the horns, the hooves and the tuft white.

  16. Step 16: Dark grey horns

Colour the 2 horns and the 4 hooves dark grey.

  17. Step 17: Black marks

Colour the forehead patch, the side band and the tail tuft black. Your oryx is done!

Tip Leave the eyes and the rest of the face white.
