How to Draw an Oil Rig
Draw an oil rig in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the sea.
Step 1: The sea
Low on your paper draw one long wavy line from edge to edge for the sea. Add small ripples.
Tip An oil rig stands in the sea and drills for oil under the sea bed.
Step 2: The deck
Above the sea, leaving a gap, draw a long flat block for the deck.
Tip Keep the deck long and thin, like a ruler.
Step 3: The tower
On the middle of the deck draw a tall tower, like a thin triangle with the tip cut off.
Tip This tower is called a derrick. It holds up the drill.
Step 4: Two legs
Start under the deck, near each end. Draw 2 thick legs straight down and stop at the sea.
Tip Make both legs the same width.
Step 5: Cross braces
Draw a big X between the legs. Start each line at a leg top and stop at the other foot.
Step 6: Cap and rungs
Put a small cap on top of the tower. Draw 3 rungs across it. Start and stop on its sides.
Step 7: Zigzag braces
Start at the tower's top corner. Zigzag one slanted line across each section. Stop at a bottom corner.
Step 8: The cabin
On the right of the deck draw a box for the cabin. Add 3 small square windows.
Tip The crew eat and sleep in the cabin.
Step 9: Flare arm
On the left of the deck draw a thin arm leaning out. Top it with a teardrop flame.
Tip The flame burns off spare gas.
Step 10: Orange flame
Colour the flame orange.
Step 11: Grey cabin
Colour the cabin grey, around the 3 windows.
Step 12: Blue sea
Colour the sea blue under the wavy line and the windows sky blue.
Step 13: Red tower
Colour the tower and its cap red.
Step 14: Dark grey frame
Go over your lines, then colour the deck, the legs and the arm dark grey.
Tip Your oil rig is ready to drill!
