How to Draw a New York State Map

Step 1: The long bottom

Start at the left, below the middle. Draw a long straight line to the right. Stop past the middle.

Tip Leave room underneath for the island at the bottom.

Step 2: The slanting edge

Carry on from there. Draw a bumpy line slanting down to the right. Stop near the bottom.

Step 3: The long island

Carry on from there. Draw a long line to the right, rising a little. Stop near the right edge.

Tip This thin piece of land is called Long Island.

Step 4: Fish tail end

Start there. Make a small notch like a fish tail, then come back left. Stop before the slanting edge.

Step 5: The east side

Carry on from there. Draw a long line up, bending a little. Stop above the middle.

Step 6: The lake edge

Carry on from there. Draw a wobbly line up. Stop near the top.

Tip A long thin lake lies along this edge.

Step 7: The flat top

Carry on from there. Draw a short straight line to the left. Stop just before the middle of your paper.

Step 8: The river slant

Carry on from there. Draw a line slanting down to the left, then a small hook down.

Tip A big river runs along this slant.

Step 9: The big lake

Carry on from there. Draw a long line to the left that sags a little. Stop near the left.

Tip This edge is the shore of Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes.

Step 10: The west end

Carry on from there. Wiggle down and to the left, then drop straight down. Join your first line.

Step 11: The capital star

Inside the map near the east side, a little below the middle, draw a star for the capital city, Albany.

Step 12: The mountains

Above the star, near the top, draw 3 triangle mountains in a row, the middle one biggest.

Tip These are the Adirondack Mountains.

Step 13: Green land

Go over your lines. Colour all the land green, around the star and the 3 mountains.

Step 14: Brown and red

Colour the 3 mountains brown and the star red. Your map of New York is done!
