How to Draw a Narwhal

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a narwhal in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: round head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Round head

Above the middle of the paper, left of centre, draw a big round head, a little taller than wide.

Tip Round like a ball, with no beak. The back will hide inside the body.

  2. Step 2: Spiral tusk

From the front of the head, draw a long thin tusk to a sharp point. Add 3 slanted stripes.

Tip The tusk is a bit shorter than the head is tall. Lean all the stripes the same way, like a candy cane.

  3. Step 3: Smile and eye

Under the tusk, start on the face and draw a short smile curling up. Add a big round eye above.

Tip Leave a gap all round the eye and a white shine in the dot.

  4. Step 4: Back

From the top of the head, draw a long back sloping gently down. Stop well before the edge.

Tip No fin on the back: a narwhal's back is one smooth slope.

  5. Step 5: Belly

Start at the chin. Draw a deep belly smile, rising up to stop just below the end of the back.

Tip Leave a gap at the tail end between the back and the belly. Rub out the head inside the body.

  6. Step 6: Flipper

Under the eye draw a leaf flipper poking out of the tummy, pointing back toward the tail.

Tip Wide at the tummy, narrow at the tip. Rub out the belly line inside.

  7. Step 7: Belly band

Start on the chin, under the smile. Draw a long curve above the belly and meet it near the tail.

Tip The band marks the pale tummy. It passes above the flipper.

  8. Step 8: Tail fins

From the back's end draw a fat fin up to a notch. Add a matching fin down to the belly.

Tip The 2 fins match and lean back, like a sideways bow tie.

  9. Step 9: Spots

Draw 5 round spots on the back, some big, some small, none touching a line.

  10. Step 10: Water

Draw wave bumps right across the paper at tummy height, stopping at the narwhal's lines.

Tip The narwhal swims in the sea, so its tummy and flipper sit in the water.

  11. Step 11: Cream belly

Colour the belly under the band and the tusk cream.

  12. Step 12: Colour it grey

Colour the narwhal grey, around the cream and the spots. Colour the spots darker grey. Leave the eye white.

  13. Step 13: Blue sea

Go over your lines. Colour the sea blue down to the bottom of the paper, around the narwhal.
