How to Draw a Mountaineer

Step 1: The head

Near the top of your paper, a bit left of the middle, draw an egg head, narrower at the chin.

Tip Leave room on the right: the snowy peak rises behind.

Step 2: The face

Add 2 eyes, a nose and a smile. Each ear is a C that starts and stops on the head.

Step 3: Woolly hat

From the left of the head draw a hat over to the right. Add a band and a fluffy pompom.

Step 4: The jacket

Draw 2 neck lines. From them draw a jacket down to a flat bottom. Add 3 quilt lines across.

Step 5: Long sleeves

From the left shoulder, draw a long sleeve out to the side. From the right shoulder, draw one hanging down.

Tip The left arm reaches out: that fist will hold the ice axe.

Step 6: Hands

On the left wrist draw a round fist with a thumb bump. On the right wrist draw a round hand.

Step 7: Coil of rope

From the right shoulder, draw a big U down the chest and back to it. Add 2 smaller loops inside.

Step 8: Ice axe

Through the fist, draw 2 close lines from above the ground up to the shoulder. Add a hooked top.

Step 9: Trousers and boots

From the jacket's left end, draw 2 trouser legs down and back to its right end. Add 2 boots.

Step 10: Snowy peak and ground

From the ground draw a mountain up to a peak and back down. Add a snow zigzag and the ground.

Tip The mountain is behind: its line stops at the jacket, the arm and the trousers.

Step 11: Peach skin, pink cheeks

Go over your lines. Colour the face, neck, ears and hands peach, with a pink circle on each cheek.

Tip Leave the eyes white.

Step 12: Red jacket, grey mountain

Colour the jacket, sleeves and pompom red. Colour the axe head grey, and the mountain grey below the snow.

Step 13: Brown rope, navy hat

Colour the rope, axe handle and boots brown. Colour the hat and trousers navy, around the pompom.
