How to Draw a Milkweed
Draw a milkweed in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the flower ball.
Step 1: The flower ball
Near the top of your paper draw a big round ball with a bumpy cloud edge, about 9 bumps.
Tip Milkweed flowers grow packed together in a ball.
Step 2: Tiny flowers
Inside the ball draw 6 small circles: 1 in the middle and 5 in a ring round it.
Step 3: The stem
Start under the ball and draw a tall stem down to near the bottom, a little wider at the base.
Step 4: A small flower ball
On the left draw a smaller bumpy ball with 3 small circles. Join it to the stem with a stalk.
Step 5: The seed pod
On the right draw a fat pod standing up, round below with a pointed tip. Add its short stalk.
Tip Milkweed pods are full of fluffy seeds.
Step 6: Pod seam
Start at the bottom of the pod. Draw 1 curved line up the pod and stop at the tip.
Tip This is the seam where the pod will split open.
Step 7: Two big leaves
Below the stalks draw a long oval leaf on each side of the stem, each ending in a soft point.
Tip Milkweed leaves grow in pairs, one opposite the other.
Step 8: Two lower leaves
Lower down the stem draw another pair of leaves, a little bigger.
Step 9: Leaf lines
Start at the stem and draw 1 line along the middle of each leaf. Stop before the tip.
Step 10: Ground and grass
Draw a ground line from near one edge to near the other. Add grass tufts a finger from the stem.
Step 11: Pink flowers
Go over your lines, then colour both flower balls pink.
Step 12: Light brown pod
Colour the seed pod light brown.
Step 13: Leaf-green plant
Colour the stem, the 2 stalks and all 4 leaves leaf green, and your milkweed is done!
