How to Draw a Love Bug

Step 1: The head

Near the top of your paper, draw a wide rounded head, a little flatter along the bottom.

Tip Keep it small, about a third as wide as your paper. The shell is much bigger.

Step 2: Heart antennae

Start on top of the head. Draw 2 curves up and out. Stop each at a little heart.

Step 3: Two big eyes

In the middle of the head, draw 2 big egg eyes. Colour a big black dot in each.

Tip Leave a tiny white shine in each dot, and keep the rest of the eye white.

Step 4: A big smile

Between the eyes and a little lower, draw a flat line with a wide U under it.

Step 5: The shell

Start on the left side of the chin. Draw a big round shell and stop on the right side.

Tip Almost a circle, and much bigger than the head.

Step 6: The wing line

Start in the middle of the chin. Draw a straight line down. Stop at the bottom of the shell.

Step 7: Heart spots

Draw 3 little hearts on the left wing: top, side and bottom. Draw 3 more on the right to match.

Tip Keep the hearts clear of the middle line and the shell edge.

Step 8: Front legs

Start high on each side of the shell. Draw a thin bent leg out to a small round foot.

Step 9: More legs

Start halfway down each side. Draw 2 more thin bent legs, one below the other, each with a foot.

Step 10: The leaf

Draw a big wide leaf behind your bug, with a small point at the far left and the far right.

Tip Lift your pencil at the shell and the legs. The leaf goes behind them.

Step 11: Vein and stem

Start at the left leaf tip. Draw a line behind the shell, stop at the right tip. Add a stem.

Tip Lift your pencil at the shell, and start again on the other side.

Step 12: Green leaf

Go over your lines. Colour the leaf green, around the bug and its 6 legs.

Step 13: Red shell

Colour the shell red around the hearts. Colour the 2 antenna hearts and the mouth red too.

Step 14: Black head and hearts

Colour the head black around the eyes and mouth. Colour the 6 heart spots and the 6 legs black.
