How to Draw a Leafcutter Ant

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a leafcutter ant in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Just left of centre, draw a small sideways egg head. Leave room on the left for a big leaf.

Tip A leafcutter ant carries a piece of leaf much bigger than itself.

  2. Step 2: Two big eyes

In the middle of the head, draw 2 big egg eyes an eye apart, with a black dot in each.

  3. Step 3: Smile and cheeks

Under the eyes, draw a wide smile: a flat line with a U under it. Add 2 round cheeks.

  4. Step 4: Bent feelers

Start on top of the head. Draw 2 feelers bent like elbows, leaning back, each stopping at a ball.

  5. Step 5: Middle bead and waist

Behind the head, draw a round ball for the middle of the ant. Behind that, draw a tiny ball waist.

Tip An ant is 3 beads in a row, with a tiny waist between.

  6. Step 6: The big bottom bead

Behind the waist, draw a big sideways egg for the bottom, bigger than the head, with a curved line across.

  7. Step 7: Two little jaws

On the front of the head, draw 2 tiny pointed jaws poking out left, one above the other.

  8. Step 8: A huge leaf piece

From the jaws, draw a big leaf leaning up and forward, taller than the ant, with 3 bite notches.

Tip The leaf is the biggest thing here: leafcutter ants are tiny but strong.

  9. Step 9: Leaf vein

Start at the top jaw. Draw one long curved vein up the middle of the leaf, stopping before the top.

  10. Step 10: Legs and ground

From the middle bead, draw 3 legs bent at a knee, ending in ball feet. Draw the ground under them.

Tip Only 3 of the 6 legs show from the side.

  11. Step 11: Cheeks and mouth

Go over your lines. Colour the cheeks pink and the mouth red. Leave the eyes white.

  12. Step 12: Orange ant

Colour the head, jaws, beads, legs, feet and feeler balls orange, around the eyes, cheeks and mouth.

  13. Step 13: Green leaf

Colour the big leaf green, around the top jaw.
